How to Assess Goals

A complete guide to evaluating employee performance, providing ratings, and driving continuous improvement.

What is Goal Assessment?

Goal assessment is the process of reviewing and evaluating how well an employee has performed against their assigned goals. It is a critical part of the performance management cycle that helps organizations recognize achievements, identify areas for improvement, and make informed decisions about development and rewards.

Who can assess goals? Administrators can assess any goal in the organization. Managers can assess goals assigned to members of their department.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Navigate to Goal Assessment

From the sidebar menu, click on 'Goal Assessment'. This page shows all goals that are ready to be assessed.

2

Click 'Assess Goal'

Click the 'Assess Goal' button in the top-right corner. A form will open where you can select a goal and provide your assessment.

3

Select the Goal to Assess

From the dropdown, choose the goal you want to evaluate. Only goals that have not yet been assessed will appear in this list. The dropdown shows the goal title and the assigned employee.

4

Provide Your Assessment

Complete the assessment by filling in the following:

  • Progress (%) — Enter the percentage of goal completion (0-100). This reflects how much of the target has been achieved.
  • Rating — Select a performance rating that reflects the quality of work:
  • Comments — Provide specific, constructive feedback about the employee's performance on this goal.
5

Submit the Assessment

Review your inputs and click 'Submit'. The assessment will be recorded and the employee can view the feedback. Assessment results feed into the overall performance reports and analytics.

Understanding the Rating Scale

AWI uses a standardized rating scale to ensure consistency across all assessments. Here is what each level means:

Outstanding

Consistently exceeds all expectations. Delivers exceptional results that significantly impact the organization.

Excellent

Frequently exceeds expectations. Delivers high-quality results with minimal supervision.

Good

Meets all expectations. Delivers solid, reliable results consistently.

Needs Improvement

Partially meets expectations. Some areas require additional support or development.

Unsatisfactory

Does not meet expectations. Significant improvement is needed with a clear action plan.

What Happens After Assessment?

Performance Reports

Assessment data feeds into the Reports section, where you can view individual and team performance trends over time.

Badges & Awards

Employees who consistently receive high ratings may earn badges and recognition in the Badges & Awards section.

Action Plans

For employees who need improvement, you can create action plans with specific steps and deadlines to help them grow.

Best Practices

Assess goals promptly after completion — delayed feedback loses its impact
Be specific in your comments. Instead of 'Good job', explain what was done well and why it mattered
Use the rating scale consistently. Calibrate with other managers to ensure fairness across teams
Focus on observable behaviors and measurable outcomes, not personal traits
Balance positive feedback with constructive suggestions for improvement
Consider the full context — were there obstacles beyond the employee's control?
